Helpful Tips For Training Your New Pet Ferret

Ferrets make cute little pets once they have been trained. By nature they are playful, curious creatures but they can also be messy and a bit destructive as well. It is essential that you get some of the basic training essentials out of the way as soon as possible so you can enjoy your new furry pet.

Toilet Training

One word of caution, when you bring a new ferret home for the first time, do not let it run around your house until you have successfully toilet trained it. Ferrets tend to go a lot and if not trained properly, you will see a mess in just about every corner of your house. By toilet training, this does not mean they use the actual toilet bowl. What they can be trained to use, however, is a litter box.

When training to use a litter box, start with a small room of the house such as a bathroom. Place a litter box in the bathroom and put your ferret in the litter box, especially after it wakes up and after it has eaten. When your ferret successfully goes in the litter box, reward it with a treat. Continue this process until it is trained to use the box.

Ferret Proof Your Home

Ferrets can get into very small areas. It is important that you go through each room and cover small areas such as vents, crevices, small holes, etc. Also, keep an eye on your ferret if you have it running loosely in your home. Under refrigerators, couches and even beds can pose a problem. All it takes is a small hole in a bed mattress and your ferret will slip inside.

Walk Your Ferret

Your ferret needs exercise too and taking it outside for a walk is a great way to let it burn off some energy. You need to train it to walk on a harness before letting it outside or you could easily lose it. Start by training it to use the harness indoors. Walk it around your home until it becomes comfortable using the harness. Make sure to only use a harness for your ferret and not a leash and chain as the harness is specifically designed to support the ferret’s rib cage and neck.

Ferrets are fun little furry pets, but they do take a little time to train. Once you have them trained, they can actually sit with you on the couch, take walks and many other things that a dog and cat would do.
