Nothing Is More Loyal Than A Dog
Dogs have a special place in all our hearts. Whether it was as a trusty side kick growing up, as a working partner on a farm or as the family hound that everyone played with, almost everyone has had a dog at one time or another.
Dogs are not just about the family pet that stands loyally by your side, eats and drinks out of a bowl and costs you an arm and a leg in dog insurance at the Vets. Dogs have been a companion of man for as long back as the bronze ages, with cave paintings showing man and dog hunting and traveling together. With dogs it’s still easy to see how they became a great and useful tool to man, as today a lot of dogs are still occupied in the position they have generally held with mankind. As sled pullers in the frozen north, as hunters flushing quarry for their owners to shoot and kill, as herd dogs working with sheep and cattle, it’s easy to see the different paths that have led to dogs being pandemic everywhere across the planet.
Like so many breeds, dogs come in all shapes and varieties. Chinese shiatsu’s, for example, were bred specially for the Emperors, who prized them for their looks. Irish wolfhounds, on the other hand, some standing as high as four feet tall at the shoulder, were bred as front line troops – the Celtic battle practice was to send in the wolf hounds to attack their enemies before the troops got to them. It’s doubtful that there could be anything quite as scary as two or three hundred small horse sized creatures coming at you with fangs and claws ready to rend and tear into your flesh, running at about 30 miles per hour.
So, dogs have a long and spectacular history with man, and will continue to do so as long as man wants a companion that’s loyal, dependable and above all one that works well with all sorts of people.
