Help, My Boyfriend is Allergic to My Dog - What To Do

You think you have met that perfect someone. You bring him back to your place for the first time, so excited to show him your place and introduce him to your child, aka, felix the cat or Snoodles the dog. Within five seconds your boyfriend’s face is red, his eyes are swollen and his nose is running. He is allergic to your dog. As soon as he leaves your house, he is fine but refuses to step foot in your door ever again. What can you do, (besides get rid of Snoodles), to ease his pain?

1. Keep clean. Wash your dog’s bedding in HOT water at least twice a month, more if you can. Wash your dog as often as possible and wash your hands after touching your dog. There is even a spray you can spray on your dog to help reduce the amount of allergens that it puts in the air.

2. Keep the dog off the couch, bed, chairs and anywhere that has fabric to catch fur and hair.

3. Invest in a good HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) air purifier. Dog allergens need to be airborne for you to breathe them. The air purifier will catch most of the allergens before they make it to your nose.

4. Keep your dog in one area of the house if at all possible. This doesn’t mean one room of the house, just one area. Then you can keep people who are allergic in another area.

5. Go to the doctor. You (or person allergic), NOT the dog…No dog insurance needed! There are pills that can be taken to reduce allergic reactions to dogs. They are effective, have little or no side effects and are not too costly.

The most important thing to remember is that you don’t have to get rid of your dog. There are lots of things you can try before taking this drastic move. If your boyfriend isn’t willing to try these things then it’s time to get a new boyfriend, not a new pet! I can certainly recomend a good dating blog if you need some help and advice to get back in the game!
