Dog Meet World

Dog Meet World

Much to your pooches disappointment, ‘Dog meet world’ is not a doggie supermarket. In fact, it’s one of the most important lessons any responsible new dog owner should keep in mind when they are introducing their pet to the wide world. The lessons learnt in youth will stick with your dog throughout his adult life, so try to remember this phrase whenever you interact with your new pet. How you introduce him to the world will go a long way to influence how he will behave as an adult dog.

Proper training in the earliest months of your dogs life will save you time, money and possibly many headaches in the long run. You’ve got to make changes to accommodate your new pet; just like remembering to buy dog food, or subscribing to Dog insurance, you’ll also have to get use to a new frame of mind: You are now pack leader!

This is absolutely key to a happy life with your new dog and successful training in the most formative months of his life. Whether you like it or not, you dog is going to look for a pack leader, and if he doesn’t find a strong one then he’ll apply for the job himself. There are a number of practical training methods to teach your dog various tricks; fetching a ball, rolling over, sitting by command and so on, but intelligent control of your dog comes from learning the techniques which demonstrate to him that you are pack leader.

None of these processes should include physical violence. Whether it’s learning to sit, or understanding never to take food from a table, physical admonishment is never a suitable training method. Instead, install yourself as pack leader and you’ll be amazed at how receptive and keen your dog is to understand what you want from him.

There are a number of subtle and not so subtle techniques to claiming your crown as leader of the pack, but a full examination of these is beyond the scope of this article. Instead, please take away the understanding that although your dog will follow simple tricks and basic rules if they are re-enforced frequently enough, he’ll never come to respect –and always seek to understand and please you– unless you have established yourself as pack leader. Research on, dear new dog owner, and learn the right way to introduce your dog to the world.
