What is your Dog trying to say when he barks?
Author: admin

Ever wondered what your dog is trying to say to you when he barks… Well here's your answer!

Alert Barks:

  • Fast and long barking means: Somebody is coming!!
  • Slow and deep barking means: Somebody is approaching! Get ready to protect!
  • Fast barks with breaks every few seconds mean: Somebody is approaching. Need more information.
  • A single bark at normal volume means: What was that?

Positive Barks:

  • A couple of short high volume barks mean: Hello in doggy language.
  • Short high pitched barks mean: Surprise!
  • Two short high pitched barks mean: Check it out! Look at this! Let me out!
  • Short normal volume barks mean: I’m happy!
  • A bark that appears to falter at normal volume means: Please play with me??

Negative Barks:

  • Long–stretched barks at a high volume with breaks between mean: I'm soooooo lonely that it hurts!
  • A short bark or even how at a very high pitched volume means: OUTCH! That hurt!!!
  • Many high pitched howls in a regular pattern mean: Extreme pain or fear.
  • High pitched, urgent and desperate sounding barks with no apparent reason usually mean: Don’t mind me; I’m just getting rid of some energy by being silly.

Cat Behavior
Author: admin

Have you ever wondered why your cat seems to enjoy washing your hair and/or face?

This behavior has it’s roots in the kitten’s first minutes, because the mother’s tongue is the first thing it will experience. Cleaning and grooming each other is a sign of affection and love. So what is your cat telling you when he/she starts washing your face and/or hair? I love you and I care for you, that is the message.

Have you ever wondered why a cat kneads with his paws?

Observe a kitten nursing. The paws are kneading constantly to stimulate the mother’s milk flow. After the kitten is weaned, the behavior turns into an expression of just feeling good and safe, as well as contentment.

Worms in cats
Author: admin

Worms are internal parasites in the intestine and they affect both cats and dogs. De-worming is a routine treatment for most kittens who can expect to have worms at some point in their lives, usually hookworm or round worms.

Roundworm females can lay a million eggs in five days, so it is important to get early treatment. Often the disease is spread from the mother cat through milk. Once they have a hold on the intestine they feed from the same food the cat has eaten. Whilst diarrhea and vomiting, arte the most common symptoms a side effect of this is dehydration and the younger the animal the more susceptible they are to dehydration.

Roundworm eggs can live for many years and chemicals cannot kill them off.  They thrive in warm weather and this is the time of year when pets are most at risk.

Hookworms are so called because they are capable of hooking  themselves to the intestinal wall where they feed on blood. Adult cats can become infected when they eat the larvae but kittens can be infected across the milk or they can get them passed on through the placenta before they are even born. If they are allowed to get a serious hold without treatment then it is likely that the cats will suffer anemia, because there red cell count has diminished. The hookworms fortunately release an anti coagulant substance whilst they are feeding and when they move on to feed in another part of the intestine the anti coagulant prevents the blood from clotting. This leaves a telltale tarry stool which is black.

Living with a Deaf or Blind dog.
Author: admin

Sometimes dogs lose one or more of their senses but they are much more adaptable than people are, though of course they do need a level of protection. If you house is on more than one level then the stairs need to have a child gate fitted so if the dog does become disorientated they cannot fall down the stairs. They need to know where everything is in a house and that the floors are not going to be cluttered. Dogs have smell and memory to back up their loss of sight and with care they can even be taken to new areas to exercise. Most blind dogs react well to a harness rather than a lead, that way they have more body contact with their owner. If you have had, the animal for a while before it goes blind you will have built a natural trust and bond and most owners of dogs find that they will follow their owners.

Deafness in a dog is a more profound challenge. They can no longer go out without supervision, you cannot call them back or alert them to a danger and of course, they cannot hear the dangers of traffic. Deaf dogs still respond to vibration, as they have not lost the sense of touch. It does need a little imagination to alert the dog but you can stamp your foot in the house, the dog is capable of detecting the movement.

As dogs age like humans the health does deteriorate but you still should have many happy years left with a dog, albeit a blind or deaf one.

Ticks
Author: admin

Ticks have eight legs instead of six and are a cousin to the spider, not the insect. There are several species that feed on dogs, including the wood tick, the brown dog tick, and the deer tick, and they all thrive in tall grass, shrubby areas, and woods.

Ticks can carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, encephalitis, tularemia, tick paralysis, and Lyme disease, so it is important to prevent tick infestations in domestic dogs.

The tick is a slow mover and can easily be picked off the dog with tweezers as it crawls about looking for a feeding spot. So, after a walk in the woods, check your dog and yourself for ticks from top to bottom.

Embedded ticks should be removed immediately. Protect fingers from the tick's body fluids with surgical gloves or a plastic bag, grasp the tick firmly, rock it back and forth a few times, and pull it out. If a patch of skin comes along, it's unlikely that any of the tick's head has been left behind.

To control ticks in the environment, keep grass trimmed and control the spread of shrubbery and tall weeds.

Hand rearing pups.
Author: admin

If for any reason, you have to hand rear new puppies it is important why dogs do what they do to puppies. For instance, the licking action of the mother stimulates the dogs to go to the toilet. Newborn puppies like babies are totally dependant on their carers for the first few weeks of life.

This is very time consuming, as the puppies must be bottle-fed every two hours to start with. Each dog breed has a different formula for food and it is important for the puppies’ healthy growth and development that they are fed properly. Once they have been fed then they need to be cleaned and the genital areas washed with a cloth. This process has to be a substitute for the maternal licking.

Each day the eyes and the ears need to be cleaned with warm water and a cloth. Watch the length of the nails they may want trimming to prevent them scratching each other.  Normally with new puppies, you should weigh them daily so that you know whether they are gaining enough weight. As you are giving them the milk by hand, you know that they are getting the nutrients that they need.

Diarrhea is a common problem in hand-reared puppies, and if left unchecked dehydration can result in death. Dilute the feed with boiling water but if there is no improvement within 24 hours, consult your veterinarian. Listless crying pups are a sign that not all is well, if a puppy cries for longer than twenty minutes then they are trying to tell you something.
