Maintaining Your Cat's Health: Home Examinations

Besides scheduling annual preventive visits with your veterinarian, you can maintain your cat’s overall health be performing daily home examinations.

Whenever you cuddle your cat, do a nose-to-tail checkup. Make sure that the cat’s ears are clean and pink and have no unpleasant odor, the eyes are bright, clear, focused and free of discharge, and that her teeth are clean. Then you can proceed to make sure that your cat’s body is free of lumps, sores and any other irregularities.

Next, you can treat your cat to a good daily brushing with rubber curry brushes, for they remove the dead skin and loose hair. On the other hand, using fine-toothed metal combs help lift fleas out of the cat’s coat.

Keeping your cat’s claws clipped is important, for they can grow if not kept at the proper length. Remember that declawing a cat is a painful and unnecessary procedure; a weekly clipping will be much better.

In case of emergencies, you should familiarize yourself with emergency procedures. You should also never give your cat any medications unless you ask your veterinarian, for various human drugs are poisonous to cats.
